Islanders swept by Washington

For the first time since 1974, the Islanders failed to reach the quarterfinals of the NHL playoffs. The Capitals' 3-1 win at Nassau Coliseum closed out the best-of-five series, 3-0, as the Islanders suffered their first playoff sweep in franchise history. Islanders coach Al Arbour retired from coaching after the season before returning to the bench in 1988.
