NYC kids set to arrive on LI for summer

More than two dozen New York City children are expected to arrive in Commack Tuesday to spend the next couple of weeks enjoying summer on Long Island.

The children, who range in age from 6 to 18, are scheduled to meet their host families at 3 p.m. outside a Target store on Henry Street. The annual visits were arranged by the Nassau County Area Committee of the Fresh Air Fund.

The 26 children — some living away from home for the first time — will spend the next two weeks or more going to the beach and playing in parks while living with families in Babylon, Brightwaters, Commack, East Hampton, East Northport, Fort Salonga, Huntington, Kings Park, Long Beach, Massapequa, Nesconset, Northport, Rockville Centre, Smithtown, Wantagh, West Islip and Wyandanch.

The nonprofit Fresh Air Fund each year places thousands of New York City children from low-income neighborhoods in homes in 13 Northeastern states and Canada. The Fund estimates it has placed more than 1.7 million children since the organization’s founding in 1877.
