The state has extended some tax filing deadlines for businesses and individuals impacted by Tropical Storm Irene.

Tax officials said last week that individuals with extensions on 2010 personal income tax have until Oct. 31 to submit their return, an extra 16 days.

Businesses also have until Oct. 31 to make many payments that had been due on Aug. 26 or thereafter.

Withholding and Metropolitan Transportation Authority payroll tax payments are due Monday.

However, officials said there was no extension on sales and fuel-tax payments under the Prompt Tax system. "I hope this extension will provide some measure of relief to taxpayers experiencing hardship," said Tax Commissioner Thomas H. Mattox.

He added that requests for additional time would be considered on a case-by-case basis.

"We recognize that tax records may be inaccessible or may have been destroyed, and that some taxpayers and business owners have far more pressing matters to deal with at this time than filing tax returns," he said.

More information about the Irene-related extensions can be found online at tax.ny.gov/pdf/notices/n11_8.pdf
