Off the Wall: Go to England with TCM
Off the Wall kicks off right now.
MERRIE OLDE ENGLAND That's this weekend's stop in Turner Classic Movies' globe-trotting 31 Days of Oscar salute. British settings back such varied titles as the Fred-and-Ginger musical "The Gay Divorcee" (Saturday at 4:15 p.m.), Rex Harrison's "My Fair Lady" (Saturday night at 8), Errol Flynn's "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (Sunday at 12:45 p.m.), and Alec Guinness' "The Lavender Hill Mob" and "The Ladykillers" (Sunday at 4:45 p.m. and 6:15 p.m., all on TCM). Full lineup at tcm.com.
BEFORE THE GAME But related to it, TV has some Super offerings. Alec Baldwin hosts "The NFL Honors" (Saturday night 9-11, NBC/4) live from Indianapolis, saluting top plays and players, with music from Lenny Kravitz. Also live from Indy, Steven Tyler and Carrie Underwood make music on "Crossroads" (Saturday night at 11, CMT) from the Super Bowl Fan Jam.
AVOIDING THE SUPER BOWL If football isn't super to you, TV schedules plenty of Sunday alternatives. Among them, of course, is the too-cute "Puppy Bowl VIII" (Sunday 3-5 p.m., repeating at 5, 7, 9 and 11 p.m., Animal Planet), back for an eighth go-round with dogs, pigs and birds. There's nastier animal action in NatGeo Wild's Predator Bowl (noon-11 p.m.). Women run wild in BBC America's comic Fabulous Bowl marathon of "Absolutely Fabulous" (10 a.m.-Monday 6 a.m.) Sentimental movies like Barbra Streisand's "The Prince of Tides" fill Antenna TV's Emotional Bowl (1 p.m.-12:30 a.m.). ABC Family has a "Bring It On"-athon (9 a.m.-7 p.m.), followed by femme-centric flicks "Mamma Mia" and "Dirty Dancing" (7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.). Other scripted series options Sunday include "Sex and the City" (3-11 p.m., E), "House" (6 a.m.- Monday 6 a.m., Cloo), "Being Human" (9 a.m.-10 p.m., Syfy), "Reed Between the Lines" (10 a.m.-11 p.m., BET), and "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" (2-11 p.m., GMC). Check listings for Sunday reality stackups on women-aimed channels Bravo ("Real Housewives"), Food ("Cupcake Wars"), GSN ("Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?"), Oxygen ("Snapped"), Style ("Big Rich Texas") and WE ("My Fair Wedding").
SCRIPTED SERIES PREMIERES As the broadcast networks debut lots of ultrahyped shows, try some under-the-radar arrivals. The family comedy "How to Rock" (Saturday night at 8:30 and 9, Nickelodeon) finds Master P daughter Cymphonique Miller joining a new band. And on Tuesday, Netflix subscribers can access that streaming service's first original series, "Lilyhammer," starring "Sopranos" made man Steve Van Zandt as a mobster who testifies against the boss and ends up in Norway. Preview at youtube.com/watch?v=bfRgVbp9gSY.
UNSCRIPTED DEBUTS Ready for that fateful day in December 2012? "Doomsday Preppers" (Tuesday at 9 and 10 p.m., NatGeo) are getting set for the end of the world as we know it. Meanwhile, "Mudcats" (Thursday at 10 p.m., History) are hand-fishers who aren't hillbillies, apparently, since they grab giant catfish in flatland Oklahoma. Meet 'em at history.com/mudcats.
