Officials to offer free training on use of Narcan to save opiate overdose victims

Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano and Legislative Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves (R-East Meadow) are inviting the public to receive free training on recognizing an opiate overdose and how to reverse its effects in order to save a life.

The program will be held Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Morrelly Homeland Security Center, 510 Grumman Rd. West in Bethpage.

“Our residents continue to be affected by the deadly consequences of substance use and misuse in our County. Our hope is that you’ll never need to use the Narcan,” Mangano said in a statement. “But just in case, we want to give our loved ones already addicted .?.?. a chance to find treatment and recovery and go on to live productive, healthy lives.”

This is the second such program in Nassau, which last year became the first county in the state outside of New York City to train the public in using Narcan. Narcan reverses the potentially deadly effects of heroin and prescription painkillers such as oxycodone and Vicodin.

Those who take the training will receive a free Narcan kit, if they are 18 or older.
