Dennis Walsh of Mineola was curious last month when he saw two flagpoles displaying Old Glory at Roosevelt Field Mall being torn down.

Then Walsh, 60, heard from a friend that the mall’s parent company, Simon Malls, was taking down flagpoles at malls across the country.

Not true.

Turns out the American flag is being moved to a more prominent spot at the Old Country Road main entrance, said Nadine Nakamura, Roosevelt Field’s general manager. The footing for the flagpole was poured last Friday, and the pole should be back up this Friday or Monday, she said.

One pole will go up, but it’s unknown if a second flagpole will be used in the new display. The dual flags were previously located at the entrance near Modell’s Sporting Goods and Houston’s Restaurant.

Nakamura said the mall planned to make the switch sooner, but the recent bad weather made it impossible to pour the cement footing and have it dry properly.

“That’s great,” said Walsh when he heard the flagpole will return.
