Old landfill could be solar power site

The closed landfill at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Old Bethpage Solid Waste Disposal Complex could become a solar power generating site.
The town board Tuesday approved a resolution to direct the town clerk to publish a request for proposals for setting up solar panels on the 120-acre property east of Round Swamp Road.
Supervisor John Venditto said, “It sounds like an excellent idea to utilize the site for solar energy.” He said electricity generated could be sold to the Long Island Power Authority or used to run equipment on the property, which now serves as a refuse transfer station since the 68-acre landfill was closed in 1986.
“I think it’s an outstanding idea,” Concerned Citizens of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Community president Carol Meschkow told the board. “It’s a wonderful place to reclaim.”
She added that she would like to see the town demolish the old smokestacks on the property and set up some kind of environmental education center there.
