Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman's correct decision to put an end to consideration of a parking garage at the Port Washington Long Island Rail Road station was courageous and right ["Stop the circling in Port Washington," Editorial, June 16].
The Port Washington police and fire companies expressed deep concerns about the effect of traffic on already burdened streets and about safety at a hulking garage. The safety of my three daughters and all other young people must be paramount.
Plus, at $25,000 a spot, the effect on parking district taxes would be harmful at a time when Port Washington taxpayers are already staggering under oppressive taxes.
The town has other ways to address parking, including adding surface parking, instead of building this ugly structure in the middle of downtown.
