Irish eke one out

Jonas Gray rushed for a touchdown, David Ruffer kicked three field goals and host Notre Dame recovered an onside kick with a little less than 2 minutes to play to hold off Boston College, 16-14, yesterday.

Ruffer had field goals of 40, 41 and 27 yards for the Irish (8-3), who matched their victory total from last year with their fourth straight win. But Gray left in the third quarter with an apparent knee injury. Gray had extended his scoring streak to eight games with a 26-yard run on the opening drive of the game.

Rutgers tied on top

Freshman Jawan Jamison rushed for a career-high 200 yards and two touchdowns and host Rutgers (8-3, 4-2) moved into a share of first place in the Big East with a 20-3 victory over Cincinnati.

The victory moved Rutgers into a tie for first with Louisville (6-5, 4-2). Rutgers' two losses were to Louisville and West Virginia, so it does not control its own destiny.

Columbia gets a W

Host Columbia (1-9, 1-7 Ivy) broke its 10-game losing streak as Sean Brackett threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score in overtime, and the defense stopped Brown (7-3, 4-3) on a goal-line stand in the second overtime for a 35-28 win.

Spartans clinch division

Kirk Cousins threw for 273 yards and three touchdowns in a little more than a half, leading No. 15 Michigan State to a 55-3 victory over Indiana in their home finale. The Spartans (9-2, 6-1) clinched the Big Ten Legends division crown.-- AP
