While many Long Islanders will be tucking into turkey and trimmings Thursday on Thanksgiving, Long Island’s hunger organizations will tend to the neediest among us by offering free holiday meals.

Cynthia Sucich, spokeswoman for the Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN) in Hempstead, said seven of her organization’s 19 soup kitchens will be open for the holiday — three in Nassau County, four in Suffolk.

Last Thanksgiving, her group served just more than 300 people; this year, Sucich said, she expects the number to rise by about a quarter.

“Just because of the way things have been over past couple months, we’re anticipating that number to be higher this year,” she said.
