BOSTON -- Catcher Matt Wieters had three RBIs and starter Miguel Gonzalez tossed 6 1/3 strong innings as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Red Sox, 4-2, Friday night to keep pace with the Yankees in the American League East.

The Orioles (86-64) are a game behind the Yankees, who beat the Athletics, 2-1. The Orioles broke a tie with the A's for the top wild-card spot. All three teams have 12 games

Gonzalez (7-4, 3.52 ERA) gave up seven hits and two earned runs. Jon Lester (9-13, 4.96 ERA) gave up four runs in seven innings and lost for the first time in his 21 career starts against the Orioles. He had been 14-0.

Jim Johnson pitched the ninth for his club-record 46th save, one more than the mark Randy Myers set in 1997.

Baltimore, winners of five straight, have two more games in Boston before returning home. -- AP
