Orioles' DH takes mound, beats Red Sox in 17th inning
Chris Davis went 0-for-8, fanned five times and hit into a double play -- but with the Orioles out of pitchers, he tossed two scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win as Baltimore beat host Boston Sunday, 9-6, in 17 innings. Said Davis, "I was like 'Sweet! I get to try something different today -- because hitting ain't working.' "
Davis outdueled Red Sox outfielder Darnell McDonald, who allowed a three-run homer by Adam Jones in the top of the 17th. It was the first major- league game since 1925 in which both teams put a position player on the mound.
J.J. Hardy had five hits, including two homers, as Baltimore won its fifth in a row.
Angels 4, Blue Jays 3: Albert Pujols went deep for host Los Angeles after going 139 at-bats without a homer in regular-season games. When he returned to the dugout, all the players were hiding in the tunnel.
Athletics 9, Rays 5: Brandon Inge homered and drove in four runs for visiting Oakland, which scored eight runs in 42/3 innings off Matt Moore.
Indians 4, Rangers 2: Ubaldo Jimenez threw seven scoreless innings and Asdrubal Cabrera hit a two-run double as host Cleveland handed Yu Darvish (career-high 11 strikeouts in six innings) his first loss.
Tigers 3, White Sox 1: Prince Fielder hit his fourth home run for host Detroit.
Mariners 5, Twins 2: Jesus Montero had a two-run double and Mike Carp homered for host Seattle.
Phillies 9, Nationals 3: Cole Hamels gave up five hits in eight innings and Hunter Pence hit a pair of two-run homers to snap a seven-game losing streak against Washington. Bryce Harper went 2-for-3 and stole home for the Nats.
Braves 7, Rockies 2: Freddie Freeman hit a three-run homer for visiting Atlanta.
Marlins 6, Padres 3: Ricky Nolasco (4-0) helped visiting Miami to its sixth straight win.
Cubs 4, Dodgers 3: Host Chicago won in the 11th inning when David DeJesus received a bases-loaded walk.
Giants 4, Brewers 3: Pinch hitter Hector Sanchez singled over a five-man infield with the bases loaded in the 11th.
Cardinals 8, Astros 1: Tyler Greene hit two homers and Adam Wainwright improved to 10-1 in 17 appearances against host Houston.
