Out-of-town Sandy donations for Long Beach schools

Middle schools in Massachusetts and Rhode Island have donated money and boxes of school supplies to Long Beach Public Schools, which continue to rebuild after superstorm Sandy.

Schools in Marshfield, Mass., and Tiverton, R.I., undertook donation drives to help Long Beach’s hard-hit schools. Students at both schools had been moved by images they saw on the news of destruction caused by superstorm Sandy, a spokeswoman for the Long Beach district said.

Furnace Brook Middle School students in Marshfield launched a letter-writing campaign and collected more than 90 boxes of school supplies, ranging from pencils and notebooks to rubber gloves and bandages, the spokeswoman said. They also raised money to guy gift cards to replace classroom rugs that were damaged by Sandy, the spokeswoman said.

Tiverton Middle School students held a bake sale and other fundraising events to raise $750 and collect dozens of books and supplies for the students, the spokeswoman said.
Furnace Brook’s donation was delivered on Jan. 10, and Tiverton’s offering arrived on Monday.

The Long Beach school district appreciates that the students brought “good wishes and heartfelt support for a speedy and complete recovery from the damage caused by the storm,” the spokeswoman said.

The Long Beach district has been getting lots of donations of books and supplies from schools, publishing firms and other organizations as it continues to recover after Sandy.
