Overdose prevention seminar in Massapequa

Two nonprofit organizations will co-host a drug overdose prevention seminar next month in Massapequa.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and Drug Free Long Island have titled the event “Long Islanders Fighting an Epidemic” and plan to offer training for health care professionals, parents, educators and students over age 18.

With heroin and prescription painkiller use on the rise — and the issue in the news following the killings during a Medford pharmacy robbery last month — officials will provide tips on how to administer Narcan, the antidote for opioid overdose.

“Overdose deaths generally do not happen spontaneously; they take one to three hours,” Jeffrey Reynolds, LICADD’s executive director, said in a statement. “With timely medical care, most overdose deaths are preventable.”

The program will include an hour-long lecture and a 20-minute demonstration. It will be held Aug. 17 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, Room A, 451 Unqua Rd., Massapequa.
