Oyster Bay board OKs beach upgrades

The Oyster Bay Town board Tuesday approved a contract to reconstruct the deteriorating bulkhead at Philip B. Healey Beach in Massapequa and signed off on completion of another contract for a replacement roof at the pavilion at Tobay Beach on the Atlantic Ocean.

At Healey Beach, a facility for town residents only on South Oyster Bay, the lowest acceptable bid was submitted by Chesterfield Associates of Westhampton Beach for $1,078,511.

The board authorized Supervisor John Venditto to sign a contract in that amount and hold an additional $53,025 for potential increases in the scope of the project.

The project will get under way shortly. It will include removal and replacement of the existing bulkhead and pilings, reconstruction of the play area, installation of an irrigation system and a new concrete perimeter curb and walkway, as well as beach grass plantings.

Following a final inspection by the consulting engineering firm of David Swift Architects, the town board authorized payment to E & A Restoration of Syosset for the routine replacement of the roof on the Tobay oceanside pavilion at a cost of $508,393.

In other action, the board scheduled public hearings on its proposed 2012 budget on Oct. 18 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. at town hall.
