Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia was in the spotlight last Saturday ... literally.

She made a cameo appearance in the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Fiorello!,” a play about the life of former New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, which is being performed by the Patio Players at the Plainview Jewish Center.

“I was very happy to be a part of it,” Alesia said.

Alesia played a client of LaGuardia’s law firm. For irony, the cast performs a song about the firm’s clients, economically challenged defendants looking to avoid prison.

“Here's one more client who's another financial gem,” they sang as Alesia, a Republican, appeared on stage. Nassau County Legis. Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury) filled the role Sunday.

Alesia said the show was standing-room only, and the audience found the scene quite funny. “Fiorello!” is not Alesia’s first theatrical experience. She said she was in theater throughout high school, where she played Helen Keller and “The Mute” in “The Fantasticks.”

“They were two nonspeaking roles, so I guess that’s indicative of my skills,” she said, laughing.

The final performances of “Fiorello!” will be at 8:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Plainview Jewish Center, 95 Floral Dr., Plainview.

Alesia’s performance last Saturday was her only one. Jacobs is expected to appear in Sunday’s performance.
