Oyster Bay re-ups security guard training program

Oyster Bay has renewed the security guard school training certification provided to the town through the state’s Division of Criminal Justice Services, town officials said.

The credentials permit the town to train its public safety staff as security guards, officials said.

Though the state offers security guard firearms training certification, officials said Oyster Bay does not conduct firearms training. The town’s public safety officers and bay constables do not carry guns.

Town board members in a 7-0 vote last week approved the renewal, which includes a $500 fee to the state.

The board also approved the town’s $265 million budget for 2013. Those funds include $3.8 million for the public safety department, down from $4.6 million this year.

The 2013 public safety budget has four fewer positions than the current year.
