Pall of Port Washington develops filter for midsized breweries
Pall Corp. has developed a new filtration system for midsized breweries that reduces costs by eliminating the need for diatomaceous earth in the beer-making process, the company said Wednesday.
The equipment can make it less expensive to filter impurities from beer by avoiding the costs of supplying, handling and disposing of diatomaceous earth, Port Washington-based Pall said.
Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occuring mineral commonly used to filter liquids in swimming pools and industrial processes.
Pall's beer filtration system, known as the PROFi Batch membrane system, "provides craft breweries the benefits of membrane technology previously accessible only to larger manufacturers," the company said in a news release.
The system reduces the amount of beer lost in the filtration process, uses water and energy more efficiently and produces less waste, the company said. The product also provides "high clarification resulting in excellent product quality," Pall said.
The technology "enables breweries to achieve the highest quality standards while meeting their operational, economic and environmental sustainability goals," Dirk Weber, global marketing manager beer, Pall Germany, said in a statement.
