Parade breaks out for Pierson softball team
Nobody planned to hold a parade Tuesday night in Sag Harbor. It just happened.
The Lady Whalers, Pierson High School’s girls softball team, had gone upstate to play in a regional contest, and they won. Then they got on the bus for a long trip home, expecting to be greeted by their parents.
But in the age of cellphones and email, word of their win spread quickly.
Volunteer firefighters decided to come out to honor the team, and four trucks were ready to escort the team bus back to school when it arrived at the village line around 10:30 p.m. An ambulance crew came out, too, and the village police sent a car to lead the march.
Family and friends lined the street to watch and cheer, and by the time it was over, about 100 people had turned out to greet the Lady Whalers.
The Lady Whalers’ next game will be Saturday in the state softball tournament. The Whalers’ boys baseball team lost a regional playoff game in Purchase on Wednesday.
