WHAT The fourth in a series of exhibitions drawn entirely from its rich collection, "American Portraits: Treasures From the Parrish Art Museum" showcases varied approaches to portraiture by such Long Island masters as William Sidney Mount (19th century), Fairfield Porter (20th) and Chuck Close (to the present). Perhaps surprising to many art connoisseurs are the intimate family portraits by William Merritt Chase, best known for his landscape masterworks. Of course, no portrait collection would be comprehensive without photography. Among the still images are former Parrish artist-in- residence Dawoud Bey's Polaroid series "Anthony" and Richard Avedon's "Generals of the Daughters of the American Revolution." Other artists include James McNeil Whistler, Larry Rivers and Robert De Niro Sr. Parrish curator Alicia Longwell explores the notion that any portrait is, to some ex- tent, a self-portrait. No vanity there, eh?

WHEN | WHERE Opens Saturday with a 6 p.m. preview and a screening of the video "Inside the Museum: American Portraits." Through Nov. 27, Parrish Art Museum, 25 Jobs Lane, Southampton. Museum hours: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays-Saturdays, 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays

INFO $5, $3 seniors and students, children younger than 18 free, $10 opening night by reservation; parrishart.org, 631-283-2118

THEATER: 'Sherlock Holmes -- The Final Adventure'

WHAT In "Sherlock Holmes -- The Final Adventure," the master sleuth is lured out of semiretirement by a case he can't resist. The King of Bohemia -- we don't think he's South Shore royalty -- is being blackmailed. Seems there's a compromising photo of him with an opera diva Holmes has long admired. Not quite trusting himself, he enlists Watson as a chaperone, only to find it's a nefarious -- what else? -- plot by Professor Moriarty.

WHEN | WHERE Saturday night at 8, Sunday at 2:30 p.m. through Oct. 30 at BroadHollow's BayWay Arts Center, 265 E. Main St., East Islip. Also Nov. 12-27, BroadHollow at Elmont, 700 Hempstead Tpke.

INFO $14-$20, $25 at door; broadhollow.org, 631-581-2700 (check website for Elmont prices)
