Patchogue art exhibit promotes healing
Some had predicted Saturday will be the end of the world, but a group of Latino artists didn’t intend their Saturday night exhibit in Patchogue to be about literal death when they named it “Genesis and Apocalypse: Latino artists’ visions of beginnings and endings.”
The event, scheduled at The Congregational Church of Patchogue, is focused on creation and destruction as a symbolic way of exploring community life and change, said the Rev. Dwight Lee Wolter.
The exhibit highlights the work of Latino painters and sculptors from Long Island and the New York region, also showcasing a creative side of Patchogue — the village where immigrant Marcelo Lucero was killed in a 2008 hate attack. Lucero’s funeral took place at the church.
“We are going from wounding to healing as a multicultural community, and art can help us express that,” Wolter said.
The exhibit, which is free, will be on display from 7 to 10 p.m. at the church, 95 East Main St.
