The Patchogue Village superintendent of the Department of Public Works will now issue tickets to restaurants that clog the sewer system.

The board of trustees passed a resolution Monday night to amend village code 353, switching the responsibility of inspecting grease traps from the building department to public works.

Grease trap violation fines can be up to $1,000, said Mayor Paul Pontieri Jr., who praised the move.

Joseph Dean, the public works superintendent, and the village sewer plant operator will check restaurants and other properties, Village Attorney Brian Egan said.
