Restaurant and bar owners in Patchogue may soon have to place cigarette receptacles at their entrances and exits, much to the appreciation of some, if the village board of trustees amends an existing code.

Shop owners have recently complained to the building department about ongoing littering problems as patrons, who aren’t allowed to smoke inside the establishments, discard cigarette butts on streets and sidewalks.

In turn, building department officials requested that the board set a public hearing to amend the chapter code, which would require outside receptacles.

The board discussed the issue at Monday’s meeting and is expected to make a decision on the matter at its June 25 session.
