Patrick Corbin pitches Diamondbacks past Dodgers

Patrick Corbin pitched two-hit ball for six innings after his promotion from the minors, and the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks got home runs from Miguel Montero and newcomer Chris Johnson and completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 4-0 victory Wednesday.

Montero opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI single against rookie Stephen Fife (0-1) and made it 4-0 in the eighth with his 13th homer, a two-run shot off Randy Choate.

Corbin (3-4) struck out five and walked two in his sixth major league start.

Shane Victorino was 0-for-4 in his Dodgers' debut in leftfield. It was a homecoming of sorts for Victorino, who was selected by Los Angeles in the sixth round of the 1999 draft.

Two-time All-Star Bobby Abreu, a 17-year veteran who spent the past three months as a part-time leftfielder and pinch hitter for the Dodgers after the Angels released him, was designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for Victorino.

Pirates 8, Cubs 4: Michael McKenry and Starling Marte homered to back a strong start by Jeff Karstens (4-2) for visiting Pittsburgh. Andrew McCutchen had two hits and scored three times for the Pirates.

Brewers 13, Astros 4: Ryan Braun hit his NL-leading 29th homer and host Milwaukee connected four times to complete a three-game sweep.

Rays 4, Athletics 1: Alex Cobb (5-8) shut down Oakland for seven innings and Carlos Peña homered to help visiting Tampa Bay take two of three against the A's and move within 1 1/2 games of Oakland for the second wild-card spot in the American League.

White Sox 3, Twins 2: Jake Peavy (9-7) struck out eight in eight innings and Alejandro De Aza gave visiting Chicago the lead in the eighth with an infield single off the leg of Scott Diamond (9-5).

Mesoraco suspended 3 games

Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco has been suspended for three games and fined by Major League Baseball for making contact with an umpire during an argument. Unless he appeals, Mesoraco was to begin serving his suspension Wednesday night against San Diego. -- AP
