Main Street in Southampton will be closed until Tuesday afternoon for impromptu paving, just in time for the Memorial Day rush.

Mayor Mark Epley said the village originally was told it would not be eligible for state funding called CHIPS (Consolidated local street & Highway Improvement Program), but was alerted late last week that it could have the money for the project as long as the work was completed by May 10.

The project began Monday morning. Traffic will be routed behind the stores, and should not be too much of a disruption, Epley said

The project will be completely reimbursable by the CHIPS money, Epley said.
