With tax bills being distributed this week, Smithtown Town officials are reminding residents they can pay their taxes online or by phone.

The first half of the bill is due by Jan. 10 to avoid penalty, and the remainder is due by May 31, said Lisa Medina, an account clerk in the office of the receiver of taxes. There are no grace periods without penalty, she said.

Residents may pay taxes via Xpress-pay, an online service, by credit card or by electronic check from a checking or savings account, Medina said.

If using a credit card online, residents are charged an additional service fee reflecting 2.6 percent of the total amount charged, she said. Residents avoid this service fee if they pay online with an electronic check, instead paying a flat $1.95 fee.

Those who would like to pay by phone can call 800-577-6324. If using a credit card by phone, residents also are charged with the 2.6 percent service fee and an additional $1.
The additional methods of paying tax bills offer more convenience for residents, Medina said.

“It saves a lot of time, rather than waiting in line at Town Hall,” she said. “They’ll wait until the last minute, and we’ll have a line going down the hall.”
