Peace march planned near shooting site

A Latino organization is calling on Huntington Station residents and other community groups to join it on a peace march Saturday in response to the daylight shooting of three men that took place there on Nov. 27.
Ed Pérez, president of the Friends of Huntington Station Latin Quarter, said the violent incident affirms the need for local revitalization efforts that would pair increased police patrols with economic development projects and cultural activities.
Pérez, whose group is seeking to unite the hamlet’s Hispanic community by organizing events such as street cleanups and community festivals, said it’s up to area residents to demand change in their community.
“We have to speak as one voice to say that we don’t want these violent incidents to take place here,” Pérez said. “We want to say that this type of activity is not acceptable and that we need help and resources to fight it.”
The march will start at 9 a.m. at New York Avenue and East 9th Street, less than a block from the site of the shootings. Participants will pray together before marching a half-mile north on New York Avenue to Depot Road.
