A car struck and killed a pedestrian who was crossing a busy thoroughfare in the Carle Place shopping district Thursday afternoon, Nassau police said.

Old Country Road was shut down in both directions as of 6:30 p.m. Thursday as detectives worked to piece together what had happened, police said.

The man was struck just before 3:45 p.m. near Zeckendorf Boulevard, police said.

The driver stayed at the scene, police said.

Photos of the crash show a Nissan Maxima with a white sheet over the car’s broken windshield.

The crash happened near The Gallery at Westbury Plaza, one of several busy shopping centers at that intersection, where Old Country Road has several lanes in each direction.

A police spokesman said other details, including whether any criminality was involved, were not immediately available.
