Pettitte will have one more start in minors
Brian Cashman said Monday that Andy Pettitte's next stop wouldn't be in the majors.
Joe Girardi said Tuesday, "I can't tell you exactly where," it will be.
Pettitte, who allowed five earned runs in his start with Class-A Tampa Monday, is likely to start again in Florida or with Double-A Trenton. The 39-year-old originally was to pitch for Trenton Monday but was shifted south because of the cold.
Girardi said Pettitte could get an extra day's rest before his next start -- meaning it would come Sunday -- because the lefthander threw 96 pitches. Assuming Pettitte's next start would come in the majors five days later -- the Yankee haven't said that will be the case though it's still a safe bet -- that would put him in line to start Friday, May 11, against the Mariners at the Stadium.
Pettitte, of course, made a detour in his rehab Tuesday that he probably preferred not to have, going to Washington to testify in the Roger Clemens perjury trial. Girardi said it's better to testify now than after the pitcher is back in the rotation.
"I would think it would be something that you wouldn't want to interrupt your season," Girardi said. "I would think it would be good to get it out of the way.
Girardi spoke to Pettitte before Monday's start. "He didn't really lead me to believe that it was going to affect the way he was going to throw the baseball," Girardi said of his testifying. "But I'm sure it was on his mind. I don't know how it wouldn't be."
Gardner not quite ready
Though Brett Gardner (right elbow strain) is due to come off the DL Thursday, Girardi said he won't be activated then. "He's supposed to do more stuff today," Girardi said of on-field work. Girardi said Gardner would have one or two rehab starts before rejoining the team.
First for Martin
Russell Martin got the first start of his career at DH as Girardi went with Chris Stewart at catcher for the second time in three days. Girardi liked Stewart's career numbers against lefties: .288/.382 OBP vs. .175/.235 against righties.
Pineda OK after surgery
Michael Pineda underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a tear in his labrum. He was operated on by Dr. David Altchek and assisted by Yankees team physician Christopher Ahmad. "I heard it went well," Girardi said.
