Phillies beat Nats, Rollins goes on DL
Phillies 14, Nationals 7
Chase Utley hit two homers and Shane Victorino had a career-high five RBIs as host Philadelphia won for their best start in 17 years.
The two-time defending NL champions are 7-1 for the first time since their pennant-winning season in 1993. A potent offense has carried the Phillies- they've averaged eight runs per game and have had double-digit hits in all but two.
On a night when neither starting pitcher lasted two innings, Philadelphia's bullpen was more effective. Former Met Nelson Figueroa (1-1) allowed one run in 31/3 innings in relief of Kyle Kendrick. Three other relievers combined for four scoreless innings.
Victorino, batting leadoff in place of the injured Jimmy Rollins, was 4-for-5. His two-run shot off Jason Bergmann (0-1) gave the Phillies a 9-7 lead in the fifth. He hit a bases-loaded triple in the seventh to make it 13-7.
Earlier, the Phillies put Rollins on the 15-day disabled list with a calf injury. Rollins, a three-time All-Star shortstop and 2007 NL MVP, is expected to miss two to four weeks.
Marlins 5, Reds 3
Jorge Cantu homered in the fifth for host Florida to become the first player in major league history to have at least one hit and one RBI in each of his team's first nine games.
Cardinals 2, Astros 1
Brad Penny (1-0) allowed an unearned run and three hits in seven innings and Albert Pujols drove in a run for his major league-leading 15th RBI for host St. Louis. Another loss in the series finale would match the Houston franchise-worst 0-9 start in 1983. The Astros did finish that year 85-77.
Cubs 7, Brewers 6
An inning after Alfonso Soriano was pulled out of leftfield in a double switch, host Chicago rallied. Kosuke Fukudome and Ryan Theriot each hit two-run singles with two outs in the eighth inning as the Cubs erased a 6-3 deficit. Theriot had four hits, Fukudome three RBIs and Geovany Soto hit his first homer.
Giants 6, Pirates 0
Aubrey Huff hit his first inside-the-park home run, and Jonathan Sanchez (1-0) struck out 11 in eight innings for host San Francisco. Eli Whiteside hit a three-run homer and Aaron Rowand a two-run shot as the Giants improved to 7-2, their best start since going 8-1 in 2003 - their last playoff season. - AP
