In Stony Brook Village this fall, pink scarecrows will help in the fight against breast cancer.

The Ward Melville Heritage Organization is accepting entry forms for its 21st annual Scarecrow Competition, leading up to the Halloween Festival at the Stony Brook Village Center on Oct. 31 For the first time, entries decorated in a majority of pink will receive 50 bonus points toward the judging.

“We thought we’d have a little different twist on it this year,” said Marie Gilberti, communications manager for the Ward Melville Heritage Organization, adding that the pink scarecrows are a perfect tie-in to the organization’s 18th annual Walk for Beauty breast cancer fundraiser on Oct. 2. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The entry fee for the Scarecrow Competition is $10, and the deadline for submitting an entry form is Sept. 19. Between Sept. 23 and Sept. 25 contestants will be notified of locations at the Stony Brook Village Center where they should erect their scarecrows. From Sept. 25 through Oct. 23, the public will judge the entries by casting ballots available at Stony Brook Village Center stores.

Winners will be notified by Oct. 26, and prizes will be awarded at the Halloween Festival.
