Jordy Mercer broke a fifth-inning tie when he homered for the second day in a row, Francisco Liriano struck out six to win his second straight decision and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Giants, 5-2, yesterday in San Francisco for a three-game sweep.

Liriano (3-4) allowed four hits while outdueling Tim Hudson (3-5), who has received 17 runs of support in 11 starts.

Red Sox, Twins split: Eduardo Rodriguez allowed two hits in seven innings for host Boston in a 6-3 win in the opener of a day-night doubleheader. In the nightcap, rookie Trevor May allowed two hits in seven innings in the Twins' 2-0 win.

Astros 3, Orioles 1: In Houston, rookie Lance McCullers allowed one run in a complete game, and Chris Carter hit a pair of homers.

A's 6, Tigers 1: Sonny Gray (7-2) pitched eight shutout innings and Billy Burns hit a bases-loaded triple as Oakland handed host Detroit its sixth straight loss.

White Sox 9, Rangers 2: Chris Sale struck out a season-high 13 in seven shutout innings for visiting Chicago.

Marlins 7, Cubs 3: Giancarlo Stanton and Jeff Baker hit back-to-back homers for host Miami.

Diamondbacks 9, Braves 8: A.J. Pollock homered for the second straight game as host Arizona rallied after trailing 6-0 in the second inning.

Phillies 5, Reds 4: Cody Asche scored from second base on a fielding error in the 11th inning for host Philadelphia after Maikel Franco hit a tying, three-run homer off Aroldis Chapman in the ninth.

Cardinals 7, Brewers 4: John Lackey pitched seven strong innings for host St. Louis.

Trumbo dealt to Seattle

Seattle acquired slugger Mark Trumbo from Arizona as part of a six-player trade. Trumbo is hitting .259 with nine home runs and 23 RBIs in 46 games. Arizona also sent lefthanded pitcher and former Yankee Vidal Nuno to the Mariners, while catcher Welington Castillo, righthanded reliever Dominic Leone and two minor leaguers went to the D-backs.-- AP
