A Nassau school district became the first public school system in the state to train its entire staff on how to save opiate overdose victims.
Officials at Plainedge schools trained their staff on how to use a Narcan kit. Narcan reverses the effects of an opiate overdose.
Nassau Executive Ed Mangano told News 12 that he hopes other school districts will train their staff about how to administer the life-saving drug.
Morgan Essiq, who has been saved four separate times by a Narcan kit, says that knowledge about the drug is important.
"There's no use in hiding it anymore. We're losing way too many people, young and old," says Essiq. "I can honestly say that if Narcan was not in existence, I would not be alive."
There were nearly 200 deaths in Nassau County last year related to heroin and opiate abuse.
