East Hampton town and village officials are working on plans to build a joint municipal fuel facility that would replace the aging pump stations operated individually by the two governments.

Both the village board and the town board are expected to approve a joint request to seek a state grant of up to $400,000 to design and build that facility when they hold their regular meetings in March.

East Hampton Town Supervisor Bill Wilkinson and East Hampton Village Mayor Paul Rickenbach said they supported the venture, and both predicted it would save money for local taxpayers.

Any grant application must be filed with the state by March 13. Work in preparing the application is being done jointly by the town finance department and village administrator Larry Cantwell.

While East Hampton Village is at the western edge of the town, Town Hall and many of the town vehicles that would use the shared fuel facility are within a few miles of the village line.
