Plane struck by lightning lands at LaGuardia
An American Eagle flight from Detroit landed safely Wednesday at LaGuardia Airport after the crew declared an emergency, reporting the aircraft had been struck twice by lightning, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
American Airlines said the Embraer 135, a small, low-wing regional jet, carried 20 passengers and a crew of three.
There were no reported injuries.
The flight, Flight 4563, left Detroit at 8:30 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive at LaGuardia at 10:15 a.m. It landed without incident at 10:43 a.m.
In a statement released to Newsday, American said the flight was struck by lightning "on approach" to LaGuardia.
"The captain declared an emergency as a precaution and the plane landed safely" the statement read, in part.
American said a maintenance team was inspecting the aircraft, but had no further comment.
