Point Lookout turbine hits production milestone
Hempstead Town’s Point Lookout wind turbine has surpassed a major production milestone — 100,000 kilowatt hours, town officials said.
The turbine, situated at the town’s Department of Conservation and Waterways, opened in December and has generated 133,000 kilowatt hours, officials said. The turbine provides power to the only hydrogen fueling station on Long Island.
“Powered by the winds off Point Lookout, this wind turbine provides an almost constant supply of clean, renewable energy for the town,” Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray said in a statement.
The turbine is expected to generate between 180,000 and 240,000 kilowatt hours per year.
The 121-foot turbine powers a water-to-hydrogen conversion process that creates hydrogen fuel, town officials said. The fuel is stored at Hempstead’s hydrogen fueling station and is used by the town’s fuel-cell vehicles, officials said.
The turbine cost an estimated $615,000 and was funded via a $4.6 million federal grant.
