Four people were killed when a car left a Westchester roadway early Sunday morning, striking an overpass, state police said.
Police said they responded at 5:20 a.m. to the crash on the Sprain Brook Parkway, between Jackson Avenue and Route 100B in Greenburgh.
The car was driving north on the parkway, north of Jackson Avenue, police said.
A preliminary investigation "shows there was a high rate of speed involved," State Trooper Melissa McMorris said.
Passersby attempted to help, but backed off as the vehicle burst into flames, police said. One passerby traveling on the Sprain Brook Parkway saw the vehicle engulfed and contacted Westchester County 911, police said.
The Greenville Fire Department and state troopers responded to the scene and the fire was extinguished by 5:45 a.m., police said.
Police identified those in the 2013 rented Volkswagen Golf as driver Bruno Vaccarezza, 19, of Cos Cob, Conn.; front seat passenger Fernanda Gomez, 19, of Port Chester; and backseat passengers Juliana Restrepo, 18 also of Port Chester and Vincent Mendoza, 20, of Norwalk, Conn.
