Police: Man drove drunk with son in Lake Grove
A Central Islip man faces a felony Leandra's Law charge of driving while under the influence of drugs after police found him driving with his son and another youth Tuesday in Lake Grove, Suffolk County police said.
Dominic Tola, 34, of 26 Anne Lane, was stopped at about 11:30 a.m. for talking on his cell phone in a 2009 Nissan on Hawkins Avenue near Dual Drive, police said.
While interviewing Tola, police officer Michael Milo determined he was under the influence of drugs. Tola's son, 16, and a neighbor's 12-year-old son were passengers in the car, police said.
Tola is charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, endangering the welfare of a child, driving while ability impaired by drugs and unlawful possession of marijuana, police said.
Under Leandra's Law, passed last year, the aggravated driving while intoxicated charge is a felony. The law was passed after the death of Leandra Rosado, 11, who was killed in a DWI accident after the minivan in which she was a passenger crashed on the West Side Highway in Manhattan.
Tola was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Central Islip.
