Police search resumes for Shannan Gilbert Monday

The search for Shannan Gilbert resulted in the discovery of the remains of 10 people along Ocean Parkway. The bodies were discovered during searches conducted between Dec. 11, 2010, and April 11 this year.

Family and friends of four women whose remains were among those found a year ago will hold a one-year anniversary vigil Tuesday at the sites of the grisly discoveries. The four were identified as prostitutes by police, who suspect they were the victims of a serial killer.

Sunday flowers were placed where the bodies of Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainard Barnes and Amber Costello were found.

Gilbert, a sex worker, who had been summoned to the community on May 1, 2010, by a man who was answering her ad on Craigslist, was last seen running in what Suffolk County Chief of Detectives Dominick Varrone called last week "a paranoia, irrational state."

Five of the bodies have been positively identified but Gilbert's whereabouts are unknown and investigators do not believe her disappearance is connected.

This will be the fifth search since last week conducted inside the Oak Beach community for any evidence related to Gilbert.

During the search, investigators found a pocketbook with Gilbert's identification, a pair of tattered jeans, a pair of shoes, a cellphone and lip gloss.

The entrance to Oak Beach has been under guard since the discovery and only residents and those with prior permission from the residents are allowed into the area, now considered a crime scene.
