Police are searching for a gunman who fired a shot into the air during an argument Monday in Hempstead, forcing nearby Barack Obama Elementary School into lockdown.

The incident occurred at 11:18 a.m., Nassau County police said. The gunman approached a man, 22, on Albemarle Avenue, got into an argument, produced a handgun - and fired one round into the air.

The gunman then fled.

The other man was not injured.

Police said the school was put on temporary lockdown. No students were injured.

Police ask anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential, police said.
