I was amazed that an article in your paper mentioned that the Suffolk County Police Department was not aware of a single arrest for fireworks possession over the holiday weekend ["Amid festivities came arrests," News, July 6]. I suggest that all law enforcement officials receive mandatory hearing tests, as the M-80 explosions rattling my windows at 1 in the morning seemed like an overt exercise in lawbreaking.

Over the past few days, Newsday has had stories about the danger of fireworks and the injuries that result. We are reminded that fireworks are illegal in New York State.

Driving around Long Island, one was bombarded with numerous private sonic booms and fireworks displays. Does someone need to get killed before the law is enforced and not scoffed at?
