Police shouldn't protect informants too much

I read about the young lady, Jo'Anna Bird, who was killed by her boyfriend, Leonardo Valdez-Cruz ["Nassau fights report's release," Editorial, Dec. 7].
This young lady asked for police protection but never got it, because, as the family claimed, this man was a police informant.
From what I understand, the police do use informants and some are protected to a degree, while others are given a free pass because the information is helping the police solve a case.
When is the pass canceled? When does the scale of justice get balanced, the public get a break and these people get taken off the streets and punished?Joe Sgroi
