Pollutant collection event in New Hyde Park

Items such as aerosols, fertilizers and thermostats are welcome at the Town of North Hempstead’s first fall event for collecting pollutants.

The event — “Stop Throwing Out Pollutants” or simply, S.T.O.P. — will take place Sept. 7, at Michael J. Tully Park (1801 Evergreen Ave. in New Hyde Park), from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The town said other returnable items include, but are not limited to, household chemicals, pesticides, disinfectants, bulbs, rechargeable and lithium batteries, television sets and computers. Regarding paints, the town asks that residents only bring oil-based ones; it will not accept latex and water-based paints.

Residents can also shred and dispose of their personal documents, including credit cards, free of charge. They can also dispose of pharmaceuticals, officials said.

Through a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters, the town said the organization will accept stuffed animals, gently used and working clothes, electronics, toys, bikes, scooters, luggage, dishes and cosmetics, among other items. By donating, the town said, residents can receive a receipt for income tax purposes.
