The piece "Crop loss and our warming planet" [Opinion, May 15] tells us that global warming may hurt farm production as food demand grows. This is posed as a ticking time bomb. What is missing here is that the real ticking time bomb is unchecked population growth.

A decade ago the United Nations projected that the world's population would peak from the current 6 billion to about 9 billion people. The latest projections range from 7.8 billion to 10.8 billion people by 2050.

Unless population growth is moderated and, hopefully in time, the total world population is reduced, there will be increasing global warming, water and food shortages, and increased strife in the world.
