The Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills will no longer install memorial benches on the golf course, but will instead allow dedicated pavers by the club entrance.

The wooden benches sprinkled around the course are prone to deterioration, Port Jefferson Village Mayor Margot Garant said Tuesday.

“The new greens superintendent is saying the installation of these memorials causes maintenance issues; they’re hard to maintain,” Garant said.

The golf course hosts about a half dozen memorials purchased by members in memory of relatives, Garant said. The existing memorials will be grandfathered in and remain in place.

“We thought we’d move away from those types of memorials that need maintenance,” she said. “The paver concept is more permanent.”
