Port Washington conservancy plans Asian garden park

A Port Washington nonprofit is hoping to add “Asian garden” to the list of North Hempstead’s town parks.
The Port Washington Parks Conservancy is gearing up to create the garden in the Blumenfeld Family Park in Port Washington as a nod to the area’s growing Asian population. The Conservancy hopes to fund the $200,000 project through grants and donations.
Holly Byrne, executive secretary of the group, said the idea has been in development for several months. The design includes a dry stream, a water feature and possibly a teahouse that could be used for events.
“Something different, something unique and something that would highlight what’s all around us,” Byrne said.
A preliminary design has been completed and presented as a gift to the town board, which formally accepted it at the Jan. 8 meeting.
Byrne said her group plans to seek grants from federal and state agencies, as well as donations, to fund the construction of the park. If all goes according to plan, construction would begin next year.
She said the Conservancy also will seek to form alliances with other local groups around the park, and sign up volunteers who could help to maintain it.
“That’s our hope — identify who wants to be a part of it, and who’s interested,” she said.
