Port Washington eyesore to be demolished; 30 parking spots installed

The North Hempstead Town board voted at its meeting on Tuesday to begin advertising for bids to demolish an old, vacant home in Port Washington that has long been seen as an eyesore in the community.

The town’s Port Washington Public Parking District purchased the properties at 5 Main St., 1070 Port Washington Blvd., and 6 Ohio Ave. last December, intending to raze the old home on the Port Washington Boulevard parcel and build about 30 spaces of parking, in addition to green space and bicycle parking, on the three sites.

The home, known as the “Shields Property” after its former owners, has been boarded up and vacant for decades.

“This is a long time coming,” town supervisor Jon Kaiman said at the meeting. “Finally, we are taking it down.”

Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio, who represents Port Washington, said the community “will be very happy to finally see that structure come down.”

“I can’t wait to get rid of that building,” she said.
