Port Washington honors 100 years of service

Come May 1, the corner of Main Street and Irma Avenue in Port Washington will have a new identity.

In celebration of the Alper family’s 100 years in business, the intersection will become known as Alper’s Corner.

A century ago Samuel Alper opened a jewelry store on Main Street. As time went on, the family business expanded, taking over a nearby auto-parts store.

The expansion continued through the years and generations and currently is Alper’s True Value Hardware.

Last month the North Hempstead Town Board adopted a resolution to rename the intersection Alper’s Corner, a designation that will run through April 30, 2012.

Town Board member Fred Pollack said three generations of the Alper family have run the business.
