Port Washington parents protest state's new common core academic standards

Port Washington parents voiced their concerns on the state's controversial new curriculum Wednesday night.

The common core academic standards will measure students' abilities by encouraging them to find different ways to answer the same problem on exams. The practice is being phased in by school districts across 45 states, including New York.

Educators say there are benefits to the new standards, but parents insist they're impractical.

"The tests are not reflective of their intelligence and they waste a lot of school time preparing for the tests," says parent Katherine Solomon.

State Board of Regents member Roger Tilles helped develop the standards. At the meeting, he defended them as a way of enhancing problem-solving and creativity.

The next meeting will be held in Garden City later this month.
