Posey calls for protection for catchers

Giants catcher Buster Posey says it's "highly likely" he will miss the rest of the season after breaking a bone in his left leg and tearing three ligaments in his ankle in a collision at home plate Wednesday.

Posey said in a conference call with San Francisco reporters Friday that he is still committed to playing catcher whenever he returns. He also asked that Major League Baseball and the players' union look at ways to protect catchers.

Posey felt Florida's Scott Cousins could have avoided the slide but said the collision was a legal play. He holds no ill will against Cousins.

Price fans 12 for Rays

David Price struck out a career-high 12 in seven innings and Casey Kotchman and Sam Fuld homered as host Tampa Bay beat Cleveland, 5-0, Friday night. Price (6-4) allowed four hits and walked two.

Red Sox 6, Tigers 3: Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford homered in a five-run third inning in Detroit. Boston won for the 12th time in 14 games. Tim Wakefield (2-1) got his 195th career win.

Blue Jays 4, White Sox 2: Yunel Escobar doubled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and Jose Molina singled in an insurance run in the eighth for host Toronto.

Angels 6, Twins 5: Maicer Izturis singled in the winning run in the ninth in Minneapolis.

Giants 5, Brewers 4: Brandon Crawford hit a grand slam in his first big-league game and Tim Lincecum (5-4) gave up three runs in seven innings in Milwaukee.

Diamondbacks 7, Astros 6: Juan Miranda hit two-run homers in the fifth and sixth innings to help Arizona come back from a 6-0 deficit in Houston.

Reds 5, Braves 1: Just back from the minors, Mike Leake (4-2) allowed one run, seven hits and three walks in six innings in Atlanta.

Nationals 2, Padres 1: Jason Bartlett tied it with a home run in the top of the ninth but Michael Morse led off the bottom of the inning with the winning homer for host Washington.

Pirates 4, Cubs 2: Kevin Correia (7-4) pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning, allowing four hits, for visiting Pittsburgh.-- AP
